Being Available Is Not Being Chosen
Before a source can appear in an AI answer, it has to become available to the system in some usable form.
That sounds obvious.
It is also where many AI visibility discussions become imprecise.
Availability is not selection.
A page can be crawlable, readable, relevant, useful, and structurally clear while still not appearing in the final answer.
A source can do many things correctly and still be absent.
That absence does not automatically mean the source was badly optimised.
It may mean the source never entered the retrieval set. It may mean a different source was easier to cite. It may mean the platform preferred a more established authority. It may mean the answer was synthesised from general model priors rather than a visible source. It may mean the source was useful context but not displayed.

Selection means it survives the conditions that produce the answer.
Those are different problems.
What Source Eligibility Means
Source eligibility is the condition of being available to a system as a possible input.
That availability can involve several layers.

None of these layers guarantees visibility.
But weakness in any layer can reduce the chance that a source will be retrieved, understood, cited, or used.

A poorly structured page may be difficult to quote.
A thin archive may fail to establish authority around the topic.
A page with no internal relationships may appear isolated even when its argument is strong.
This is why source eligibility is not merely a technical SEO issue.
It is a structural issue.

A useful page should make it easy to answer questions such as:
what is this page about?
what claim does it make?
what problem does it solve?
what concepts does it define?
what evidence supports it?
what other pages does it connect to?
what larger structure does it belong to?
This matters because AI systems do not experience a page as a human reader does.
They operate on representations of the page.
If the page does not clearly express its structure, the representation may be weak.
A page can be meaningful to a human while remaining hard for a system to classify.

- internal consistency

For smaller sites, authority often comes from specificity rather than scale.
A niche archive can become useful when it explains a structure more clearly than larger but more generic sources.

A single page can answer a question.

This distinction becomes important in AI-mediated discovery because answer systems often compress isolated pages.
If a page only answers one basic question, the answer may exhaust it.
If the page belongs to a larger archive, the answer may create a further information need.
Archive eligibility is the condition where a site is not just a page but a connected body of work.
That archive may include:
- methods
- datasets
- examples
- case studies
- revisions
- definitions
- internal debates
- applied outputs
- visual demonstrations
- linked articles that form a cumulative argument
This is how a source becomes harder to replace.
It is not only supplying an answer.
It is supplying the structure around the answer.

The weak question is:

how do we make this source
available, legible, attributable,
and worth returning to?
That question changes the work.
It moves attention away from one-off optimisation and towards source design.
A source should be built so that it can be retrieved, quoted, cited, linked, understood, and revisited.
That requires pages to do more than target prompts.
They need to belong to a structure.
